When talking about fashion and style, the biker always comes out because they project an irreverent, original and authentic image. Although much of what they wear has to do with leather and related clothing lines, jewelry and other accessories are essential elements.

Creating a look in the best biker style is not easy, since the idea is to be inspired by them and not for this to become a costume. That is why the attitude and good taste in the choice of jewelry, costume jewelery and accessories, will be the key for you to succeed if what you want is adopt some characteristics of this type of attire.

From leather jackets, boots and pants, to silver biker jewelry, part of the inspiration to get this rebellious and carefree image of motorcycle lovers. And if you really are one of them, you cannot stop visiting the best online sites that offer this type of accessories to complement your entire look.

For bikers, rings, bracelets, chains or earrings are not just an ornament, they are symbols of independence and freedom. One of the most used are those in the shape of a skull, since it is the one that best embodies courage in the face of death or any danger that arises along the way.

There is a legend that indicates that when a person dies, they leave a mark or a skull sign, but if they carry the symbol with them it means that death has already been present, which implies that it also works as a sort of amulet.

This type of jewelry generates a fearsome image, the most popular accessories are rings, leather bracelets with metal rivets, silver earrings, heavy medallions, silver buckles and thick metal chains.

Among the theme of biker jewelry we can highlight the gothic aspect, images of animals, Celts and the aforementioned skulls. Among the most used animals, you can find totem dragons, bears, eagles, lions and tigers, since they are the ones that best personify strength and courage.

HARLEY JEWELRY FOR BIKERS

On the other hand, one of the most interesting stamps for this community are the Harley rings. Creativity, original style and good taste are the main characteristics of this collection, since they are handmade, and also at a very competitive price.

All this work results in unique pieces that stand out, attract attention and reflect perfection. The intention of this collection is to combine all the elegance and exclusivity offered by fine craftsmanship, either in sterling silver or sterling silver.

What is 24K, 18K, 14K gold and other carat measurements

What does 18 carat, 18 carat and 18k mean for gold?

Here in Peru, I notice a bit of confusion about what is 24 carat (24K), 18 carat (18k) gold and other measures such as 14k and 12k. It is nothing more than the concentration of gold that a piece has: or in other words, the purity of the gold. In this entry I explain the meaning of these symbols.

Why is the purity of gold measured?

Pure gold is 24K. But pure gold is very soft and does not hold its shape well. So we jewelers combine the gold with other metals to harden the gold. We typically combine gold with silver and copper to create "yellow gold." But by adding those metals, the gold is no longer pure. And since gold is the most expensive metal among the three, the buyer has a right to know how much gold is in a piece. An honest jewelry store always provides this information.

Why is the purity of gold measured in karats and not in percentage?

That is a good question. It would make more sense to say 100 gold, right? It is my understanding that it comes from ancient Roman culture.

So what is 22k, 18k, 14k and 12k gold?

These numbers signify the concentration, by weight, of the gold in a jewel. I hope this table clarifies the matter:

gold titlegold concentrationConcentration of other metals
24KPresent in several = 100%0%
22KPresent in several = 91.7%Present in several = 8.3%
18KPresent in several = 75%Present in several = 25%
14KPresent in several = 58.3%Present in several = 41.7%
12KPresent in several = 50%Present in several = 50%

The calculation is as follows: take the title in carats and divide by 24. That gives the percentage of gold in the jewel. For example 22/24 = 91.7%

An 18k gold jewel weighing 10 grams will have 7.5g of pure gold and 2.5g of other metals.

Why should I buy 22 karat or 18 karat gold considering that 14k and 12k are gold too?

Gold does not oxidize like silver. It may lose its luster a little after many years. But it does not corrode. By adding other metals, the characteristics of the other metals begin to show. 14 or 12k gold has a high level of silver, so that jewelry can oxidize. But 14k is harder so it's harder to scratch or bruise compared to 18k.

In my opinion, the shine and color of 22k and 18k gold is more pleasing. I work with 18k and also 22k on request. 18k is the standard in most parts of the world and that quality of gold does not oxidize. If a jeweler says that he sells jewelry with pure gold, the jeweler is probably not trustworthy; it is not possible to make a jewel of pure gold because the 24k jewel does not keep its shape.

How do I know that the gold they sell me is really what they say?

The jewelry business is based more than anything on trust. Legally, all gold jewelry requires a stamp designating the purity of the piece. Typically, the jeweler places the stamp on an inside or front part. This is not how the seal looks when the jewel is on. But really the way to know is to find a responsible and honest jeweler.

Apparatus and methods exist for testing the quality of metal. But each test has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, there are electronic devices to test the purity of gold. But these devices can only test the surface and do not detect whether the gold is plated.

Also it can be tested with nitric acid because that acid hardly reacts with pure gold. But a jeweler has to file a part of the surface to ensure that the gold is not plated.

Another option is to weigh two jewels of the same size. For a silver and a gold jewel, equal in shape, volume and appearance, the gold one weighs more. Gold is denser than silver.

And what is gold plated?

Gold plating is a chemical process where a thin layer of gold is deposited on top of another metal. Usually the other metal is silver. The thin layer of gold will wear off over time. A jeweler has to scrape and/or cut the jewel to tell if a jewel is plated. I will give more details in a future post.

What is the difference between yellow gold and red gold?

It is also a topic for another post. But it has nothing to do with carats. But it has to do with what metals we add to gold to harden it and manipulate its color. An 18k yellow gold and 18k red gold jewel means that the piece is 75% gold by weight and 25% other metals.

Precious and non-precious metals in jewelry

Precious and non-precious metals in jewelry

There are various metals featured in the world of jewelry. A complete list would include not only precious metals (noble metals) such as gold and silver, but certain non-precious metals (base metals) such as copper, tungsten, iron, titanium, zinc, and nickel.

To make informed decisions, it is important to understand what a piece of jewelry is made of. It is very rare to find a jewel that is 100% made of only one pure metal. What is sold as "gold jewelry" is really a mixture of pure gold with other metals. For example, 18k gold jewelry is 75% pure gold and 25% other metals such as palladium, silver, and copper. Another example is "sterling silver." It is a combination of 92.5% pure silver and usually 7.5% copper.

Precious metals have certain characteristics that we admire, such as their shine. However, no metal has all the qualities necessary to make a lasting piece of jewelry, so we jewelers mix precious metals with base metals to match the characteristics of the metal.

Admiring the photos in this article, you will notice that most of the metals used in jewelry have a white or gray cast. Gold, which has a natural yellow color, and copper, which has a red color, are the exceptions.

I warn my readers that the article is quite long. If you are interested in a specific metal, I suggest "browsing" the article by looking for the title of the metal you are looking for.

precious metals

In jewelry, there is a clear division between precious metals and non-precious metals. A precious metal generally has the following characteristics:

  • little reactive – so it is common to find the metal in its pure state in nature.
  • high economic value
  • bright
  • ductile, meaning that metal can be worked relatively easily to change its shape
  • rare in terms of limited quantity

Gold, platinum, palladium, rhodium, and silver are included in this category. These are the most common precious metals in jewelry. But there are other precious metals too: iridium, osmium and ruthenium. These last three have more applications in industry than in jewelry.

base metals

While ductility is a desirable characteristic, certain precious metals are too soft and soft to hold their shape over time. Pure gold, for example, is easy to bend or sink. Other precious metals may be too brittle, hard, or easy to scratch. The precious metals are then mixed with base metals to adjust the characteristics of the precious metal.

Generally, base metals:

  • react with other chemicals leading to corrosion
  • they have cheaper prices

In fact, supply and demand have a lot to do with what is considered a precious metal. Aluminum, for example, was a precious metal despite being one of the most abundant metals on earth. In nature, aluminum is not found in its pure state. So until an industrial purification process was invented in the mid-19th century, aluminum cost more than gold. The French made aluminum jewelry with great ingenuity and skill.

Summary of the most important precious metals in jewelry

I am going to give a summary of the precious metals and the base metals that are used in jewelry. I hope to clear up the mystery of what a jewel contains. So when you go shopping, you can enter the store well informed and with more confidence.

Gold

Possibly the metal most associated with fine jewelry, gold is a noble metal with little reactivity. So polished gold does not lose its shine easily and gold generally does not cause allergies.

Pure gold has a brilliant yellow color. Unfortunately pure gold is very easy to bend and sink, so it needs to be mixed with other metals to harden it. Different mixtures lead to different properties especially in terms of color.

A jewel is never 100% pure gold because it would not hold its shape. 18 karat (18k) jewelry is 75% pure gold and 25% other metals. The other metals can be silver, copper or palladium depending on the color one wants to achieve. To learn more about the difference between 24k, 22k, 18k, etc.

Some jewelry stores also mix nickel into their gold alloys especially white gold. I do not use nickel in my jewelry because it causes allergies in many people. And I suggest not buying jewelry with a high level of nickel.

Platinum

Traditionally, platinum is used for jewelry with a lot of diamonds. Here are the main characteristics of platinum:

  • Platinum has a natural white shine that highlights the brilliance of diamonds.
  • Also platinum is stronger than gold, so it holds stones more securely. Even sometimes a gold jewel will have the stone held together with platinum because of the platinum's durability.
  • Platinum is also quite dense, so a platinum jewelery feels heavier.

Generally there are jewelers specialized in working only with platinum. But since platinum is not as fashionable as it used to be, there are fewer and fewer jewelers with the know-how.

Like gold, platinum is not used in its pure state. A piece of jewelry will generally be 95% pure platinum. The other metals can be copper, cobalt, or a noble metal such as iridium, ruthenium, or palladium.

An interesting feature of platinum is what happens when it is scratched off. For most metals, when scraped, a small bit of the metal falls off. But platinum is very hard, so when you scratch it, the scratched part moves to another part of the piece. Over time, the jewel takes on a slightly gray color that makes it look like an antique. It is one of the charms of this metal.

Palladium

Palladium jewelry can be made but it is quite rare. It is more common to use palladium in what is called "white gold".

Pure gold is naturally yellow. By mixing pure gold with palladium, the result is a white color. 18k white gold can have an alloy of 75% pure gold with maybe 16% pure palladium and 9% pure silver.

Rodio

Rhodium has a high shine, so it is used to plate gold, platinum or silver. This bath leaves a thin layer of rhodium, and the piece remains very shiny.

Unfortunately, the rhodium plating is superficial and wears off over time. It is rare to find pure rhodium jewelry because it is a difficult metal to carve.

Silver

Silver is probably the most ubiquitous noble metal in jewelry. Silver is generally found in three formulations: 950, sterling silver, and 900. The term 950 means that the jewel contains 95% pure silver and 5% other metals such as copper. Sterling silver is synonymous with 925 which is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. And 900 silver has 90% pure silver and 10% copper.

Freshly and well polished, the silver has a fairly strong shine. Unfortunately, this metal is more reactive compared to the other noble metals. The silver reacts with sulfur in the air, and this causes the silver to lose its shine and change color. But with good care, tarnishing of silver can be avoided.

Summary of the most important base metals in jewelry

Copper

Perhaps the most important base metal in jewelry is copper. Copper is a soft metal like gold and silver. But by mixing copper with these noble metals, the result is a harder metal. This allows the jewel to keep its shape.

This phenomenon is due to the atomic structures of copper versus silver and gold. The copper atom has a smaller radius, so it ends up getting between the spaces. That creates a harder metal.

Copper also plays a fundamental role in pink and red golds. As already mentioned, pure gold is naturally yellow. By mixing pure gold with copper, the gold takes on a redder color.

There are some people who have an allergy to copper, but this allergy is not very common.

Tungsten

Tungsten is a highly hard metal that does not scratch easily. Actually, the tungsten jewelry on the market is tungsten carbide – a mixture of tungsten with carbon.

Tungsten carbide is so strong that it is used in industrial drills, drill bits, and hammers. So you can already imagine how durable a tungsten carbide jewelery is. At the same time, its hardness makes it a jewel susceptible to fractures if it receives too strong a blow.

Titanium

Similar to tungsten in terms of color, titanium is a harder metal than gold and silver. The big difference is that titanium is much lighter and less hard compared to tungsten. And titanium doesn't fracture as easily as tungsten.

Tungsten and titanium are cheaper alternatives to precious metals. It is becoming more and more fashionable to see titanium or tungsten wedding rings for men.

Iron

Iron rusts quickly and is hardly used in its pure form. But today it is common to find cheap stainless steel jewelry. Stainless steel is a combination of iron with chromium and other metals such as nickel, copper or titanium.

Stainless steel is quite popular in inexpensive jewelry especially because it does not corrode. Certain stainless steels contain the metal nickel, which can cause an allergy. But you can find nickel free jewelry too.

Zinc

Zinc is a base metal used primarily to bleach gold. I personally do not use this metal in my jewelry because I prefer to use the noble metal palladium to whiten pure yellow gold.

Nickel

Nickel is a metal that can also be used to bleach gold. But this metal causes skin allergies in many people, so all my jewelry is nickel free. In fact, the European Union has certain restrictions against the use of nickel in jewelry.

There is a metal called "alpaca" that has a certain similarity to silver. But "alpaca" is made of nickel, zinc, and copper: three base metals with no precious metals at all. Alpaca can cause allergies due to its high level of nickel.

The golden rules for wearing jewelry that every man should know

¿how to wear jewelry or where to start if you had not tried before?

wear jewelry It is not reserved for women, men can and should wear pearls, chains, bracelets, rings and earrings, and it is the trend that you have to learn to master because it is not going anywhere.

And it is that wearing jewelry is a form of expression, it is a differentiating factor for an outfit that other ways would be boring or too simple, or you can even use it as a way to update yourself and look current without having to change a lot of things in your closet. They say that the devil is in the details, that means that the smallest elements are the ones that finish a look and make it elevated, more cool or sophisticated, and it definitely has to do with the jewelry accessories that you wear.

Jaden Smith, Harry Styles and Justin Bieber wear pearls, Jake Gyllenhaal wear gold or silver chains and nobody ever lacks a good watch, the thing about jewelry is that if you're not careful, you can fall into excess or end up looking like the sideboard of some brand that wants to sell it all at the same time.

Jewelry and fashion have gone hand in hand since the beginning of time, and the decision not to wear it only affects you. You can wear classic, timeless, elegant, fun pieces or that you could pass on to your children as an inheritance, the options are endless and not taking advantage of them has no benefit.

The rules for wearing jewelry:

Pay attention to trends

Of course there is classical pieces that don't go out of style, like a simple ring or a thin silver chain, but if you want to use jewelry as a modern accessory and an element that will highlight your look, then it is worth knowing the trends and adding them to your manner. For example, if the trend is pearls, you can add a subtle and small necklace that is not too flashy, but that adds something to the outfit.

It is worth combining metals (and materials)

Before it was thought that gold and silver could not be combined, but that is not law. You can actually mix and match all kinds of colors and metals, as long as you have good balance and keep it looking intentional, making sure each element you add is consistent with the rest.

In addition, you canadd materials such as leather, pearls or even diamonds and stones depending on the occasion and what you want to achieve with your look. Just remember, less is more and you don't need to use it all at once.

Take care of the sizes

Both in chains and in rings, bracelets, earrings and watches, The size of the piece should be proportional to your size and height, taking care that they have the appropriate thickness, length and width so that it does not seem that everything is too big for you or that you do not have room for something else.

With the chains, if you are going to change several, you must take care that the length of each one is different and that they have a good weight, since otherwise they can end up tangled.

dress for the occasion

The jewelry you wear should be appropriate for the type of event. For situations cAsual or by day it can be more colorful and go for less luxurious materials, while for black-tie or evening events, gold (yellow or white) and glitter are more effective, as they add elegance to a suit or tuxedo.

Don't hide behind her

Don't use the jewelry like armor, but like a way to show your personality. This means that you don't need to use all your pieces at once as a distraction, but rather choose wisely, only adding items that really have a reason to be there.

Wearing too much jewelry will not only make your neck, hands and wrists feel heavy, it can also damage the pieces and create the effect that you are wearing a real costume and outfit.

Look for versatility and minimalism

If you want parts that you can use with more types of outfits and styles, then you have to look for versatile styles that are easy to combine, pieces that will not overshadow your everyday look, but that look “dressy” enough to wear in more formal situations. The idea is that it becomes part of your personal stamp in terms of style.

Also, you don't need chunky chains and bracelets, sometimes less is more and an element with a minimal and subtle design can be much more elegant and intelligent, like the simple chain that Jake Gyllenhaal has come to use with his suits.

Look for quality

Wedding rings and heirloom pieces (or family heirlooms) go beyond the rules and you can wear them with anything.

do not force it

Finally, don't force yourself to wear things you don't like just because they are trending. Not every piece is for everyone, so instead of trying to match a trend, match the trend to your style and look for options that you're comfortable with.

Quick guide to start wearing men's jewelry and make it look good

Talk today about men's jewelry as the most risky trend in the world is a joke. Men have worn jewelry all our lives, from kings to rappers. But why did we lose them?

The answer is in the story itself. The inflection point by which the pattern of today's formal fashion is cut is known as 'The great male resignation'. The psychoanalyst arrived at this theory John Carl Flugel in the 30s and explained it to the masses in his book 'Psychology of Dress'. He came to say the following: The masculine fashion that was established at the end of the French Revolution eradicated in a sudden way all adornment of the masculine wardrobe, not on a whim, but to get away from the image of the privileged class that went through the guillotine. In this way, the watch was the only piece that was allowed in the male jewelry box, with the exception of some stamps.

Throughout the 90th century, brightness and pomp have had their comings and goings in the men's wardrobe, until the XNUMXs, when the rappers became one of the absolute style references. And they did it with an image that was far from the standards of the Wall Street yuppie or the minimalism of Calvin Klein. They did it with tracksuits, oversized clothes, sneakers and large jewels that finished off each look to demonstrate their meteoric rise to success. At first they were classified as tacky, but today they are the guide that shapes the streetwear that has dominated the last decade of our time. And that is where the jewels pass that, after the sneakers, begin to live their moment of glory. Just take a look at the luxury firms currently cutting cod.

Once again, the influence of streetwear It has managed to make pieces or aesthetics that we once rejected become an absolute trend, taking them out of the ghetto and democratizing them in a massive way. But how do we get used to jewelry again? Is there a proper way to do it? In fashion, as in life, everything is trial, error and how we feel about it. There is no specifically correct way to wear jewelry, but there is to put it into practice.

Quick guide to wearing jewelry and making it look good

The essential trick to get into a trend is to do it little by little. start with something simpleIn this way it will be easier to get your eye used to it, study how you look and increase or not the volume. The same thing happens with men's jewelry.

All the  bracelets they are possibly the option to get used to more quickly. Due to the use of the watch, our eye is more used to seeing our adorned wrists, so adding a small chain or a rigid bracelet will not cause too much visual impact.

Follow up with something discreet, maybe a fine chain in steel, silver or gold. Keep in mind that this piece will be more visible because it is in the visual frame of your face. If it is a simple cord, you can include a small pendant that is special to you, well as a medal or with some form. You can wear it both inside your t-shirt, shirts or sweaters if you need to adapt step by step or let it fall directly over the garments.

Finally, among the basic jewels we find the pending earrings and  rings. It is paradoxical that being the smallest pieces, are the most visible. The former because they basically hang from the ear, so they fit within the frame of the face. The second because, if we take into account that the hands are one of the main elements of non-verbal communication and that we are constantly moving them, it is impossible for our interlocutor not to notice them.

Choose, try, look in the mirror and add or remove as many pieces –or volume to them– as you need according to your style, because in the world of jewelry there is nothing written.
