Trends for men's jewelry this year

Unlike clothing, jewelry does not fulfill a physical function. The different garments were created to protect us from the outside and over time they evolved to fulfill that purpose, but at the same time have a certain symbology. Jewelry from the beginning was born with an ornamental purpose and loaded with social, political, cultural and even mystical symbolism.

Kings and great leaders distinguished themselves from the rest with jewels, which even spoke of the families to which they belonged. The grandmothers created amulets that protected their loved ones with different stones and metals. There are also pieces that represent important moments, such as graduation or marriage rings. Jewelry will always be loaded with symbols that represent both the social and historical context and the history of the person who wears them.

2020 was a year full of uncertainty in which the confinement invited us to, perhaps, not get ready every day as we used to. With a somewhat different rhythm of life and the reflections that a year that marked our lives leaves us, what will the trends for men's jewelry be like this 2021? We analyze it through six international and Mexican brands of men's jewelry.

Beyond the precious stones

Last year he invited us to reflect on our relationship with spirituality. Spending time with ourselves could bring us closer to our religious, spiritual, or philosophical beliefs. The consumption of horoscopes increased significantly and you may not believe in it, but you consult it from time to time just out of curiosity. Many of these beliefs give energetic and mystical power to elements such as crystals. Throughout this year it will be common to find pieces with this type of mineral in them.

for protection

Continuing with the theme, this need for divine, energetic or mystical protection will continue to feel a need. Again, you may consider yourself more of an agnostic person, but the use of charms will be present in 2021. From jewelry with religious symbols to pieces with personal meaning for "good luck". It will be common to find medal-type charms even if they lack religious or mystical symbolism. Even those amulets that are made personally with materials as simple as thread and plastic beads will be present as ornaments.

Do it yourself (DIY)

Do you remember in the 90s when the youngest made their own jewelry? Well, it's time to spend your free time creating playful accessories!... or not. During 2020, brands and characters emerged that positioned these necklaces and bracelets full of colors, personalized details, and that could alternate precious stones with fantasy elements. A clear example of this type of accessory can be seen in the promo for Harry Styles' Golden video. The singer wears a necklace that alternates irregular pearls with small transparent plastic beads and on the front reads: golden, in plastic beads too.

Goodbye genres!

Male? female? What difference does it make! That was in the past. Now if you like something and it fits you, buy it and that's it. Those barriers of male and female jewelry were left behind, generation Z came to erase the gender distinction. From large earrings, pearl necklaces, thin rings with large stones or even clothes pins; this year think outside the box and dare to experiment with jewelry that might seem “girly” at first.

Out of context

During the pandemic creativity woke up. Free time that we used to spend outside now forces us to spend time at home and allows us to play with everyday objects. It is perhaps this playful trend, added to that of super recycling, that led us to seek a new use for these objects. In jewelry we will see throughout the year hair clips, nails, metal clips and even plastic straps as the new items of desire. Although this trend is not new - we must give special mention to the Juste un Clou de Cartier collection - but we can see how it is gaining strength in the Ambush brand from Tokyo.

objects of desire

The pursuit of pleasure is one of the main characteristics of the human being. The aesthetic, physical and sexual delight are a constant in the inspiration of many designers and the world of jewelry cannot be left behind. With a new sexual revolution we find ourselves before a society more willing to talk about issues such as sexual fetishes. Jewelry seizes trends like the bdsm,  Yes, sexual practice, to create new pieces that can be enjoyed in the most intimate moments or that feed eroticism in our day to day.
